Mugai Ryu Iaihyodo is a koryu (feudal era) school of swordsmanship founded in 1693. Emphasis in Mugai Ryu is placed on practical, close-quarters techniques of drawing and cutting against single or multiple opponents. It is characterized as kireru ("cutting") iai: rather than stylized or dance-like movements, the Mugai Ryu student must strive for realism and intensity in practice. However, as a school heavily influenced by Zen, Mugai Ryu's ultimate goal is not simply sword skill. The trainee must strive to penetrate not only the forms of the art, but the very essence of the martial Way.

Training in Mugai Ryu begins with practice of the 20 fundamental seated and standing kata (forms). Later practice includes more advanced kata, and partner practice with both long and short swords. Mugai Ryu students also practice tameshigiri: the cutting of targets using live blades.

Shinjinkai serves as the Chicago branch of the United States Federation of Mugai Ryu Iaihyodo. The Federation is an extension of the Suimokai, an organization in Japan dedicated to the preservation of several martial arts, including Mugai Ryu. Niina Toyoaki Gyokudo, the soke (headmaster) of Meishi-ha Mugairyu Iaihyodo,is the leader of training within the Suimokai.  Shinjinkai Mugai Ryu members are registered with the U.S. Federation and with the Suimokai.

Mugai Ryu training is offered at Shinjinkai H.Q. in Chicago three
