The Shinjinkai Women's Aikido class, offered once weekly, is open to adult women and is led by Aikido teachers who are women.
Aikido training is actually gender-blind. Skill in Aikido arises from a deep understanding of the Aikido forms, not from size, strength, or culturally conditioned gender roles - and this understanding alone is what defines a practitioner's level. The Women's Aikido class is thus not a separate program from our regular adult Aikido classes, and female Aikido students are encouraged to attend any class.
However, because martial arts are often considered predominantly male activities, it is true that some women find it empowering to begin their training among other women, and to revisit a woman-only practice environment. The Women's Aikido class is therefore offered:
- To create a supportive environment for female Aikido practitioners.
- To encourage women's participation and community-building in Aikido.
- To showcase and cultivate the skills of woman instructors.
- To identify and address the unique strengths and challenges inherent in women's study of martial arts.
- To address specific women's self-defense and safety skills.
The Women's Aikido class meets at our Chicago H.Q. Sundays, 3:00 - 4:00pm, and is open to beginners and all levels. If you have any questions related specifically to women's Aikido at Shinjinkai, please contact us.
